[ -- and Rin realises roughly 3.42 minutes later that his open draft to haru is no longer a draft, but rather has been SENT]
Fuck! Unsend. Unsend. Shit, fuck. Fuck!
[somewhere down the hall, where good little swimmers are tucked in bed, Rei sharply yells something back, which Rin of course ignores in favour of trying to collapse his own stupid head in with his hands]
Fuuuuck.

[he shouldn't be nervous.]
[but of course, he's nervous anyway, because Haru made it weird. not to say it wasn't weird in the first place, since they're estranged, swimming-obsessed childhood best friends trying to connect again after a lot of years and a lot of baggage and a lot of growing up and apart and isolated. it's strange that he knows exactly how long it takes from Haru to get from one end of the pool to the other, and has no idea what his thoughts or future ambitions are. it's strange that Haru has been repeatedly reaching out to him, asking him for his time and his opinions and even his things to borrow, like the book tucked carefully in his gym bag]
[he'd packed it the night before, feeling stupid about the whole thing. he lends crap to Makoto and Nagisa all the time, and it's not that big of an issue. but it's not a shirt, because Nagisa dropped chocolate syrup on his, or music that he knows Makoto would like, anyway. it's different, because it's Haru, and Haru doesn't ever ask for things. he doesn't want things, not like Rin wants them, which is all the time and loudly. so he'd felt weird about how much the book had weighed in his bag throughout school, throughout practice, and then just when it felt like it has ballooned in his bag to twice his own weight Haru -- ]

[Haruka Nanase is an inconsiderate guy, but here Rin is, bag slung over his shoulder, his feet taking him to the park while he stresses away more of his youth over whether or not Haru is messing with him, or if Haru is going to think he's a huge loser for reading non-fiction for fun, or if he's going to say something stupid and blow any sentiment the gesture shouldn't have in the first place, because it's just a stupid book, for fuck's sake]

[it had all been Makoto's idea.]
[they'd all had similar trouble, originally, deciding what to get Nagisa for his birthday. it was difficult for a few reasons -- Nagisa's own considerable bank meant he rarely lacked anything he really wanted, and while he'd be happy with anything, certainly, they needed something that said both "seventeen years old" and "Nagisa" at the same time]
[this was difficult, because Nagisa's tastes were very much in line with Baby Gap and Lisa Frank]
[in any case, the boy's seniors had agreed that the best gift would be a big, expensive joint gift -- and then Haru and Rin immediately fell to arguing over what the perfect joint gift would be, since everyone now had to be satisfied with the choice]
[and this had gone on for a good part of the afternoon at Haru's house (the fight moving from the backyard, to the living room, to the kitchen, to the pool, to the living room again), until Makoto had (first made a sandwich, played on his DS) and then quietly came up with the perfect idea, all on his own]
[well, nearly perfect. one extremely hectic craft store trip later, Rin still isn't completely convinced, but can't help but agree this is their best plan yet (even if Makoto had to explain his "blueprints" for it to make even the slightest hint of sense, he drew like he'd never seen a single shape in his life, or even had one described to him, which caused another small, er, altercation of sorts, ending in Haru and Rin apologising with their heads on the floor)]
No. No, I already agreed to the dollhouse, even though he's not sixteen going on five! I'm not agreeing on stocking it with fucking creepy dolls! Why do you think I bought all these fake bugs? That's what Lola and Nagisa want in her house!
[the joint gift: a 3-story victorian style dollhouse with it's side sawed off and replaced with a door of plexiglass, to become a dream home for Nagisa's tarantula. they've finished all the handiwork on it, surprisingly efficiently, but actually decorating the thing (while sitting in a giant pile of bullshit from the craft store, which they really should have collaborated more on buying, but splitting up to save time seemed like the most efficient option -- ) is turning into a new battle]

[makoto shifts on his spot and he nearly jams a wayward scissor into his buttcheek. how did this happen? he grabs the sharp thing from under him and places it back on the middle of the table with a soft haru, the teen across from him having spent several minutes looking for the damned things (again, how did that happen?). of course, though, he doesn't want to be too intrusive because rin is having a discussion with the other.]
[haruka really wanted to go all out with this gift, following artistic ideas from things they had seen on a couple of magazine pictures in the dolls section at the toy store.]
[makoto's just... cutting shapes from cardboard here... with a utility knife. his shapes are coming along fine (haruka had drawn the shapes on pencil for him, and rin kept checking on his work almost compulsively; it was hard when he was sitting between the two--one the artist and the other the perfectionist).]
...I also think the bugs might be cute, but won't Lola try to eat them by accident? We should glue them to the chairs and other furniture.

[ it's been about two weeks or so of Nagisa feeling like shit about people he liked a lot leaving and he hasn't really done much besides go to work and avoid people. but today he decides he has had enough of that, and it's time to get over it. more than that, he realizes that this is a sign, more than any, that he needs to stop holding back before he loses even more opportunities than he already has. today he puts on his big kid panties and leaves the pullups in the dust.
he starts and then deletes this text once or twice, but only once or twice, out of nerves. he could have picked a better person to start this whole being even more bold than usual thing with. Haru is kind of a big deal for him, considering the ... issue he's had since childhood about him, one that he doesn't really think has dampened with age. then again, maybe starting with the realest of the real is the best way to go. it can only get easier after that, right. when he thinks about it that way, it's extremely easy for him to act natural. ]

[they let it sit and fester between them too long. they are both at fault here; both too cowardly to seek the other out and apologise, ask if they were alright, and just be adult enough to recognise that things would be fine.]
[instead, makoto still feels upset by haruka's words. they've clung to him ("you're always sticking your nose into other people's business!") as forcibly as the numbed ache he physically felt when haruka--taciturn and calm--brought up enough strength to push makoto back a series of steps, loudly barking at him, aiming to bite down and hurt him.]
[(he reminded himself: haru was in a bad place, i can't blame him. but insecurities surge from such long radio silence.)]
Sorry about Momotarou. He's always excitable like that, as far as I know.
[they sit in silence in makoto's room; on the floor against the bed. it's a little messy but not by much. the kittens sleep inside their box under makoto's desk, and he's honestly itching for something to do with his hands. he wishes they were awake and crawling around. instead, his shoulder is almost touching haruka's, the almost-action making him nervous]
...s-so.. [a pause, and he looks up] Rin said you guys went to Australia? I was surprised. I didn't expect him to do that...

[this is stupid. he knows it's going to bounce back, undelivered, because Nanase isn't in Holly Heights anymore -- Tachibana confirmed it, if the radio silence next door wasn't enough to declare what he already knew. but Sousuke's venting his frustration, because it's stupid, and even without Nanase around (an obnoxious presence not twenty feet from his front door some days when they both awkwardly left their houses at the same time and made eye contact), he's leftover with a lot of banal irritation. Nanase is gone, but it doesn't feel like it. Sousuke has always been hyper aware of him -- particularly because it concerned Rin -- and their close living arrangement made it worse.
now, he has a turtle as a constant, every day reminder of a person he'd rather not think about, at least as often as he does. it crawled into Sousuke's yard soon after Nanase's departure. and he knew it was his, through Rin. he remembers it being called Geokun, as stupid a name as someone like Nanase would think up. Sousuke swore he would take it to the pet store the next day (okay, maybe he'd just give it to Rin), but that turned into... a few months now.
he's researched turtle care. he's never been interested in turtles as pets (Nike is much more aligned with his pet preferences), but he discovered what it ate and what sort of environment it's supposed to be in (not the sink, he learned). it took time, but eventually Geokun got to know him, too, Sousuke thought. at least the little head peaking out whenever he'd bring food to Geokun's acquarium made Sousuke think so.
he hasn't hidden the fact that he has the turtle from Rin, but Rin thankfully has kept his mouth shut, and Sousuke won't say anything.
anyway, the point of this message: he's venting his frustration. he switches on the video camera and tilts it toward Geokun, who is waddling around with a surprising amount of energy... for a turtle.]
You should have planned this out better. [there's irritation in his voice. ugh.] Why didn't you give it to Tachibana before you left? I'm taking care of it, but not because I want to.
So hurry up and come get your turtle or I'll release him outside.
[this is pointless... Geokun just continues happily squirming around, so he turns the recording off.]

haru. i've been here a year, today. isn't that weird? i thought you'd want to know i beat you, again, wherever you are. i wasn't trying to win this, but a winner can't help winning, i guess.
i'm working hard, even if there's nobody quite at your level to compete against. if you're back in time for christmas, maybe i'll let you race me as a gift.
this is probably gonna bounce back, but if it doesn't, see you (?)

rei and sousuke are here now. if you and nitori show back up, we could have a four on four relay, just like we used to. my ultimate team is only gonna get stronger, so don't slack off.
new years is coming. do you believe in new years dreams? if you remember it, you should tell me.
